What is newt fencing?

Newt fencing as it is commonly referred to, is a barrier designed to control the movement of great crested newts. It may also be referred to as amphibian fencing, amphibian exclusion fencing, drift fencing, barrier fencing etc. It is frequently used in conjunction with a great crested newt trapping and translocation scheme, which is carried out under licence from Natural England, Countryside Council for Wales or Scottish Natural Heritage depending on which part of the UK you are in. Northern Ireland is devoid of great crested newts, however newt exclusion fencing is utilised for the protection of the common smooth newt in this region, licensable under the Northern Ireland Environment Agency.

What is reptile fencing?

Reptile fencing is a term given to a barrier which may be used when wanting to exclude, contain or redirect reptiles from a particular area i.e. a building site or road crossing. Typically it is referred to by the specific animal name such as snake fencing, adder fencing, slow worm fencing and lizard fencing. CEL offer reptile barriers suitable for all of the above mentioned species, with a choice of lifespan dependant on the duration you wish to exclude the animal for.

What is water vole fencing?

Exclusion fencing is available for most protected species, including water voles, badgers and otters too! Water vole fencing is used to exclude or contain voles within a particular area. This may be required where a road crossing or culvert is to be constructed, or when reintroducing the species at a new site. CEL offer water vole fencing in a choice of materials, including traditional 25mm marine plywood or our 100% recyclable anti climb 6mm HDPE solid sheet panels.

Where can I buy my wildlife fencing?

If you are planning a self install project or just need spare bits and pieces for that ‘unexpected’ change of plan onsite, then CEL are happy to help. We now offer a full range of essential wildlife fencing materials and products on a supply only basis.

What kind of fencing do I need?

This will depend on which species of animal you wish to protect through its exclusion and how long you wish to exclude it for. Project budget, site geography and lead time may also influence your overall decision as to which CEL fencing range is most suitable for your project. We will be happy to discuss your requirements without obligation.

Who can I get to install my fencing?

CEL are specialists in the market of installing wildlife fencing. All our key staff are accredited by the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management, the UK’s leading body for ecological professionals. However you may wish to install our fencing as a self build project. CEL can provide all your wildlife fencing requirements on a supply only basis, simply contact us for further details.

What is the lifespan of CEL’s fencing?

CEL offer a range of quality fence materials, each having varying life spans dependant on the product you choose. For temporary works or small scale projects, CEL’s UV membrane barrier carries a UV stability guarantee of 3 years. CEL’s Geo-textile barrier and semi permanent exclusion panels have a UV stability guarantee of 5 years. For longer term projects, CEL also offers permanent exclusion panels with a UV stability guarantee of 10 years.

Do you work nationally?

Yes, CEL are pleased offer our services across the full extent of the UK. We currently have stock yards in Lancashire and Warwickshire allowing us easy access to all main motorway hubs.

Do you repair or replace damaged or old fencing?

Newt and reptile fencing has been used to safeguard sites since the introduction of the Wildlife and Countryside Act in 1981. Since then there have been many advances in the range and quality of fence materials available. All CEL non-wood fence materials are custom made here in the UK. We will be happy to discuss your requirements for fence replacement, repair and removal without obligation.

What other services do you offer?

CEL wildlife fencing is a trading division of Contract Ecology and Landscapes Ecological Consultants and can offer a full range of wildlife survey, mitigation, research and advisory services to our clients at every step of their project. CEL will also undertake habitat creation and restoration work which is commonly requested by our clients to compliment our wildlife fence installations, including badger sett creation, otter holts, bat boxes and pond creation.
